The chestnut is the queen of autumn and every village in the countryside and the Tuscan mountains celebrate it with due respect and with a thousand different recipes ( tortelli filled with chestnuts, cakes, jams, roasted chestnuts, marron glace).
Lovers of steam trains can arrive with the old train that connects Florence to Marradi, where one of the most renowned chestnut festivals are held.
There are many celebrations of the chestnut at Monte Amiata, but the oldest is the Crastatone, held from October 30 to November 2 in Piancastagnaio, with typical, traditional music and dances, to revive the atmosphere of an authentic rural village.
There is a Chestnut Festival held in Arcidosso at the weekends of 18-20 and 25 to 27 October, with food stands in the old town, which for the occasion become a tavern where you can taste delicacies such as beer chestnuts or Montebianco, a delicious pudding made with chestnuts and cream.
Vivo d'Orcia town celebrates the Feast of the mushroom and chestnut 13, 19 and 20 October and in addition to tastings offers guided hikes. In Abbadia San Salvatore from 11 to 13 and 18 to 20 October with the Autumn Festival you can do guided walks in the woods looking for mushrooms and chestnuts with experts
But the chestnut is the Empress in Garfagnana: the mountains of the Lucca area, celebrated in the imposing Fortress Mont'Alfonso in Castelnuovo. Their pancakes (neccio) made with chestnut flour roasted chestnuts on the fire a must for connoisseurs. Do not miss the feast of October 20 in Sillano, dedicated to all the flavors of autumn and the ancient traditions, demonstrating how cheese is made and trekking guide in the paths of the most picturesque village.
And finally, but not least importantly in Lunigiana taste Pattoni or chestnut fritters with salami, pies and all delicious and rustic dishes that can be enjoyed only in that strip of land squatting between Tuscany, Liguria and Emilia Romagna.
