Malta’s number one visitor attraction of 2017 is revealed

It's known to millions around the world as The Silent City or Mdina.

And now Mdina has been ranked this summer's top tourist attraction in the Maltese Islands.

It pushed St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta into second place in the TripAdvisor rankings.

Fort Rinella, the Victorian fortress and museum near Kalkara, came third.

TripAdvisor users are clearly impressed by Mdina, with glowing reviews about the 'unique atmosphere' and the feeling of 'stepping back in time'.

Almost three-quarters of visitors rated the former Maltese capital city as 'excellent'.

More than 20 per cent ranked it as 'very good'.

One tourist from Dorset in England wrote: 'From afar and up close, this is a beauty.

'Mdina is a glimpse of the world that was with narrow alleys, churches and the spectacular views over the ramparts.'

A visitor from Sydney in Australia commented: 'It's amazing to wander the old streets and see the honey-coloured buildings.'
