Gearing up for the Viareggio Carnival in Tuscany

From February 7 until March 5, the papier-mâché floats are back

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi as an alchemist; Salvini as an eighteenth century noble; Boschi's papier-mâché debut; selfie mania; work, economy-related and immigration issues: these are some of the chosen themes for the allegorical floats and masks at the 2016 Viareggio Carnival. As always, there will be five days of entertainment (on Sundays in February–7, 15, 21 and 28–and on Saturday, March 5) along the Viali a Mare, with gigantic Carnival floats and machines created by local Viareggio masters.

Once again this year, the spectacle will be shown on live TV through Rai 3. As usual, the coverage will be based in piazza Mazzini during Mardi Gras, which falls on February 9 this year, and it will last for one hour. Telecameras will be set up in the square around 14.50 and will film the floats as they pass through on their way to the Belvedere of Masks. Then people celebrate Mardi Gras in the Carnival capital.
